Things at Mercedes-Benz seem to be moving fast. Just this past weekend, the German automaker launched its C63 AMG Coupe Black Series, while a few days ago we reported on the firm's plans to invest $2 billion in its US factory to build the next generation of the C-Class.

However, Mercedes has even bigger plans for the Tuscaloosa plant. According to Autonews Europe, sources within the company revealed that it aims to add a fifth model (after the M-, R-, GL- and C-Class) to its Alabama factory production line in 2015.

Ferrari’s board of directors met yesterday to discuss the financial outcome of the first half of the year. And they came out with a broad smile on their faces: in the first half of 2011, Ferrari achieved its best ever profit and sales in a six-month period in its 82-year long history.

The numbers speak for themselves: net profits for the first half of the year reached €91.8 million, a 23.5% increase over the same period last year. Its revenue rose by 19.6%, to €1,080 million, and sales by 11.8% with 3,577 units delivered, including track racers like the 458 Challenge and limited editions such as the SA Aperta, but without any contribution from the brand-new FF.

What's new today is the release of the EPA fuel-economy numbers for the 4-cylinder Explorer which is rated at 20 mpg (11.8 lt/100km) in the city and 28 mpg (8.4lt/100km) on the highway. It’s about time the Italians get off their collective backsides and knock out a competitor to the BMW 1-Series coupe. Something a bit like the Alfa Romeo Giulia Sprint of the 1960s in that it should be a two-door, three-box Bavarian-killer with a sweet-as-silk motor and looks to die for. Romanian industrial designer Prodan Dragos no doubt agrees.

His Alfa Romeo Giulia Concept packs a 180 hp (134 kW) petrol engine mated to an 80 kW electric motor and a 6spd manual transmission. It also has a lightweight body crafted out of aluminium and carbon fibre-reinforced polymer, with polycarbonate windows to further save on weight.
